Here are six pages of questions and answers to complete the explanation of Periodis. You will notice that most of the queries are about the concept ofsequential historical atlas and the semi-independent entities category, but there are also a good lot of practical questions.
We hope that this F.A.Q. page will help you in your use of the Periodis maps. Feel free to ask us further questions. We will try to give them an answer in the upcoming months.

2 - Hisatlas 1 - Kratographica

4 - Europe 2000 Names 2000 Colors
Here are 2 videos showing the sequence of the Euratlas Periodis historical maps. The first animation, the teacher's one, presents labelled maps with a medieval music soundtrack and lasts 2 minutes 59. The student's animationshows mute maps only, lasts 1 minute 54 and is accompanied by a terrific rocky song in Vaudois dialect, an extinct Franco-Provençal language, remembering the past times, by the Swiss singer and painter Bernard Rinsoz.

5 - Pictures of Syria
Syria is experiencing serious internal tension but we are not in the position to tell where, what, why and how. We can only show some simple images of this beautiful and ancient land: Damascus, Palmyra, Aleppo, Serjilla and several places that were so nice 5 months ago.

6 - Rome's World Book Website
The Map A component of the website associated with the book Rome's World: The Peutinger Map Reconsidered is finally functioning as it should, thanks to extraordinary creativity and patience by Ryan Horne at the Ancient World Mapping Center and Dr Tom Elliott at New York University. The site is readily accessible, free of charge to all, at peutinger.atlantides.org/map-a/. Map A presents the Peutinger Map as a seamless whole - invaluable for inspection, analysis, and sheer wonderment!

PERIODIS EXPERT CUSTOM MAPS
Many Euratlas visitors are sending us their comments about the Periodis Historical Atlas of Europe and it appears often their are not aware of the capabilities of Periodis Expert. Here is now a short video explaining how it is possible to create beautiful custom historical maps for display or printing with this software. This Youtube animation is fast with a lively medieval music but, of course, you can stop it at every stage to see which procedures you need to follow.

HISATLAS WORLD HISTORICAL ATLAS
Hisatlas is a set of historical maps available from several years in theEuratlas Shop. Now, the author has decided to present an online version, with maps in reduced size, of this world historical atlas. Joaquín de Salas Vara de Rey aim is to show with maps the different stages of political organizations. Of course, his project his favouring the self-constituted communities and, by travelling over Hisatlas, you will discover a long trend towards democracy.

Hisatlas 0.97 commercial version is already available and all purchasers will be entitled to download for free, within ca 2 months, the new version Hisatlas 1, on presentation of their invoice number.

ANCIENT MAPS
Moreover, in the Euratlas Shop, 3 new digital copies of ancient maps are now available:

• The England and Wales Road Map ca 1779,
• The Ottoman Empire Map 1845,
• The Thurn & Taxis Post-Roads Map 1786,

Historical Atlas of the Ancient Orient
The Altorient pages have be reorganized to match with the Euratlas website structure. Thus, it is now easier to navigate within the 30 centuries of this atlas.

PERIODIS BIG MAP 1800
The detailed historical map of Europe in 1800 AD is ready now for the Euratlas-Info subscribers.
As usual, the map was drawn with Euratlas Periodis Expert and the series will continue, at each Euratlas-Info issue.

THE ROMAN MAP OF THE WORLD
Dr. Richard Talbert, Professor of History and Classics at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, editor of the Barrington Atlas of the Greek and Roman World, unique reference book on ancient geography, is a specialist of the Tabula Peutingeriana. In 2010, he published Rome's World: The Peutinger Map Reconsidered, a work that offers a complete appreciation of the map: its discovery in the XVth century, its passing down, the numerous publication attempts, its probable origin and an interpretation about its conception and about the real aim of the lost original.
Actually Rome's World, refers to the most reliable and comprehensive online version of the Tabula Peutingeriana. The database of the map is hosted by Cambridge University Press and allows to:

• view all the names with the corresponding detail of the original and their transcription, by segment or by alphabetical list,
• view all the names and notices in red on the original,
• view all the illegible features of the original, and a lot of other information too.

It is also possible to display all the features of the original map listed by categories (isolated names, named symbols, islands, mountains, peoples etc.) or by symbol types (twin towers, rectangular buildings, walled cities etc.) These data are accompanied by an exhaustive bibliography and are correlated to those of the Barrington Atlas.
Moreover, the Peutinger Map can be read as a seamless whole in real size with a dedicated Map Viewer at peutinger.atlantides.org/map-a/ (click"here"on line 9) and it is also possible to highlight the chosen features (rivers, mountains, roads etc.), as well as the cross-references to the database.

NEW COUNTRIES PICTURES
With the help of Dolia from Bulgaria, Fahri, Yagoob, Azer, Ali, Javid and Ruslan from Azerbaijan, we have been able to add new countries in the Europe Photos section. Thus it is possible now to have an overview of Bulgaria, Azerbaijan and of the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia.

GAPMINDER
Gapminder is an information vizualisation software but above all, it is a Swedish Foundation created by the Rosling family in 2005, and whose aim is to build a fact-based worldview liberated from the fashionable myths and urban legends. Dr Hans Rosling has collected a wide amount of solid data about world health and wealth, among others, and thus, you can watch, for instance, a video showing the evolution of average life expectancy and average income (GDP per capita) in the world for the last 200 years. You'll notice that in 1811, no country in the world had a life expectancy above 41, while today, no country has a life expectancy below 44.
The Gapminder vizualisation software allows to play with these same data and you can even download it on your computer.

We are preparing an online version of Hisatlas.

EURATLAS AT SSHA MEETING
On 18 November 2010, at the Social Science History Association Meeting, Marc-Antoine Nüssli presented Euratlas activity to an audience of about thirty researchers in historical geography. The auditors were very interested in our concept. It's worth to notice the discussant raised that the uncertain boundaries should be left blank when attested scientific data are missing, instead of being simply blurred. In fact, the Georeferenced Historical Vector Data allow each user to choose the entities he wants to treat.
You can see here the Euratlas presentation in PDF format and also a moredetailed article on this topic.

PHYSICAL ATLAS OF EUROPE
We have improved the Physical Atlas of Europe. Now, you will find 127 mountains in the orography pages, 124 rivers in the hydrography pages, 319 towns in the cities pages, 69 states for the countries and 12 special territories. Note that the countries of the European Union are all shown within the borders of this wide supranational entity.

PERIODIS BIG MAPS 1100, 1000 & 600
The detailed historical maps of Europe in 1100 AD, 1000 AD and 600 AD are ready now for the Euratlas-Info subscribers.
As usual, these maps were made with Euratlas Periodis Expert and this series will continue, of course, at each Euratlas-Info issue.

EURATLAS GIS DATA OVER GOOGLE EARTH
As the Euratlas Historical Vector Data are georeferenced, they can easily be overlaid on Google Earth maps. Here are 2 examples. The first one shows the provinces of the Roman Empire in DCCCLIII AB URBE CONDITA, that is'853 years from the founding of Rome' or 100 AD. The second image shows also the Roman Empire in year 100 but with the present day boundariesdrawn in yellow. At a highest zoom level, one could also add the modern place-names or roads.
Both maps are available in JPG format for Euratlas-Info subscribers only.

ATLAS OF ISLAM 1800-2000
The Atlas der islamischen Welt, by Dr Andreas Birken, is now available as hardcover in English (Brill, 2010). It covers the history of the Islamic world from 1800 until 2000. Through 85 maps, it offers accessible surveys on population, history, politics, religion, and the economy. Colonialism and de-colonization are covered for the whole Islamic world, including post-USSR Central Asia.
This atlas contains also detailed maps about Iraq and the Gulf Wars, Afghanistan, the Arab-Israeli conflict and the issues of water management. Moreover the index lists variants of all place-names.

EURATLAS IS AT SSHA MEETING
During the 35th Annual Social Science History Association Meeting, “Power and Politics”, on 18 November 2010 (12:15 PM-02:15 PM), in downtown Chicago, Palmer House Hilton, Marc-Antoine Nüssli, Euratlas software engineer, will participate to the session 'New Directions in Historical GIS (2)'and present 'Euratlas: From Historical Mapping To Historical Geographical Information System.'

PERIODIS BIG MAPS 1200 & 1700
Here are now, for Euratlas-Info subscribers only, the detailed historical maps of Europe in 1200 AD and in 1700 AD. These maps were made with Euratlas Periodis Expert and we will continue with this series at each Euratlas-Info issue.
You have to take into account that Euratlas Periodis is capable to display the whole continent and, simultaneously, tiny provinces or towns at higher zoom levels. That is why, when all Europe is shown, several small provinces cannot be labeled. These functions, as well as powerful editing possibilities are only available in the software Periodis Expert.

SERBIA
In 1809 at Niš, after a victory against the insurgents, the Ottoman commander Hursid Pasha erected a tower with the skulls of the defeated in order to frighten the Serbian population. This structure was preserved to remember the courage of the ancestors and can still be seen.
Romuliana Felix was a palatial complex built by Emperor Galerius in about 300 AD. The ruins are at Gamzigrad, near Zaječar, in the Timok river basin. There, on 21 July 2010, excavations have revealed a unique marble statue portraying a dog biting a wild boar.
You will see pictures of Niš, Romuliana Felix wild boar and of many other places in our new Serbia section of Europe Photos.
Several photos have been added as well in the pages of Italy, Hungary andSlovakia.

PERIODIS BIG MAPS
Euratlas Periodis Web is useful to see the position and evolution of the ancient states but, since it doesn't show the provinces and dependencies, some users have difficulties in exploring the past centuries. That is why we are preparing, for Euratlas-Info members only, detailed historical maps of Europe. These maps, realized with the Periodis Expert 'Customize View' function are offering an in-depth view of European history. For now, only the years 1300, 1400, 1500 and 1600 are available in English and French, but we will present more centuries later.
The big maps are watermarked but, if you use Periodis Expert, you will be able to produce images without imprints.

HOLDERS AND OWNERS
The Periodis Web default maps are in 'owner mode'. That means that only the sovereign or 'owner' states are shown, vassal or 'holder' states being always included in their official dominant state. Of course, Periodis Expertoffers a 'Show Dependencies' mode but if you need to display the dependent states on the web, you can:

• click on the quarter of maps: Northwest etc.
• use the historical gazetteer,
• display the Euratlas-Info big maps.

Let us recall that the dependent or 'holder' states are surrounded by a dotted line having the same color as the dominant or 'owner' state.

EUROPE PHOTOS Some new pictures have been added in the Europe Photos section. You will discover new photos of Poland, Northern Germany, Swiss Plateau, Swiss Mountains and Northern France.

EURATLAS PERIODIS WEB
Here is now an online a simplified version of our historical atlas and database of Europe: Periodis Expert.
Periodis Web is presented as a gazetteer and, for each century from AD 1 to AD 2000, you can display the position of each sovereign state and of each dependent entity. You will notice that the sovereign states are highlited in red while the dependencies are shown in green. Note that if you want to see a more detailed map, especially the provinces borders or the exact area of the dependencies, you will have to zoom in by clicking on the main map or by choosing Northwest, Northeast etc.. Of course the full functionalities, provinces and cities names, relief, custom maps and search functions are only available in Periodis Expert.

Time Pictures is a freely illustrated chronology of Europe and the Mediterranean basin, counting now 144 pictures. If you need more information on a subject, you can use Wikipedia as a basis for starting your research.

Finally Periodis Expert is ready.
It is the only program that allows to explore the history of Europe and to create historical custom maps. 3) EURATLAS WEBSITE INTERFACE
We are improving the Euratlas website. Our aim is to give a clear view of the whole website and to allow an easy access to each section from every web page. Thus, we will make a wide use of cascading style sheets (CSS). For the time being, our home page, the World Atlas and the Europe Photos are ready for an easy navigation but eventually the remaining sections, especially the History of Europe pages, will be designed on the same way.

4) PHYSICAL WORLD ATLAS
We have updated the World Atlas with more recent population and lifeexpectancy data. What's more, we have added the major rivers andmountains of the world. Now, you can click on a river or mountain range name and make appear this feature on the planisphere. You will notice also the the main data are underlined by color bars whose lenght varies with the size of the element. That means that long rivers and high mountains, for instance, are underlined by long blue or green bars.

1) NETHERLANDS: PHOTOS AND MAPS
Here are some nice pictures of Amsterdam and Dutch paintings and landscapes that you will be able to download in high-resolution. We have also added two A4 printable maps of the Netherlands adapted for school tests. The first map is labelled vith the Dutch provinces and the main towns and the second one is mute.

2) EURATLAS PERIODIS BASIC
We are pleased to announce that Euratlas Periodis Basic replaces the previous Periodical Historical Atlas Basic. Amongst several improvements, we have to mention:
- a new drawing of all the Ottoman sanjaks and hereditary, mainly Kurdish, lordships, of the Spanish provinces, the French gouvernements and of the early British states,
- maps in vector format so that enlargement is possible without quality loss,
- Adobe Reader (PDF) document readable under any operating system: Windows, Mac OS X, Linux etc.

3) HISTORICAL AND POLITICAL MAPS OF THE MODERN AGE
Hisatlas is still progressing. The author, Joaquín de Salas Vara de Rey, has revised some maps and added new ones of New England, Morocco, China and Spain. Most of the new maps are in PDF (Adobe Reader) format so that much more details are displayed.
Hisatlas 0.97 includes now 266 detailed historical maps and this new version costs 24.90 euros. If you are an existing customer, send us, until July 14th, your name and purchase date and we will give you a free download link for this new version.

4) WORLD RAIL ATLAS 8
An A4 landscape soft-back publication. The 1st section gives, country by country, a historical summary of rail development, with section opening / closing and electrification dates, metro and tramway details too. The next section of 72 colour maps shows in detail all railway systems that have ever existed in the region, followed by a full index of stations. Volume 8 - The Middle East and Caucasus - came first and the gaps will be filled as the maps / history is completed. The series will be the definitive guide to the world’s railway networks with valuable contributions from most railway companies around the world.

1) PORTUGAL: PHOTOS AND MAPS
Henri the Navigator, Ferdinand Magellan, boats, bridges and sea, there is now a Portugal chapter in Europe Photo. Moreover, as a member Euratlas-Info, you can download a printable map of Portugal, blank or labeled, in color or grey shades, in English or French. This map is adapted for school tests and shows the districts of the country, the main rivers and mountain ranges.

2) GEOREFERENCED HISTORICAL VECTOR DATA
Now the Euratlas Georeferenced Historical Vector Data licences are ready for 21 centuries. Let us recall these historical databases include the shapes, long form names, short form names, political status and dependencies - i. e. owner and holder entities - of all the known European countries for each century from year 1 until year 2000. Moreover, all the known first and second level administrative divisions are provided and the databases include also nearly 3000 places and towns, with their importance degree and local name of the time, to help location. These data allow you to modify and organize spatially your own map and are particularly adapted for:
  - historical, archeological or cultural researches,
  - creation of exhibition or museum wall maps,
  - textbooks or national historical maps,
  - educational or strategy games.
In the Euratlas Shop, you will find for each century a .zip archive containing a sample file, and a link towards the bibliography and, on the same page, a small summary map.

3) PROGRESS OF THE NEW PERIODICAL ATLAS OF EUROPE
The new versions of the Periodical Historical Atlas of Europe are still in progress. The new Expert version will be a dedicated program with excellent zoom and powerful search options and several display choices. It will be possible to create customized maps by choosing which information to display or not: countries, rivers, mountains, provinces, cities, short names, long names, political dependencies etc.

The new Basic version will be a simple .pdf document with high resolution maps, 10 000 pixels wide. Here you can download a slightly reduced map from this version: the map of the Balkans and Western Anatolia in year 1300, just before the Almogavar campaign, with the Turkish beyliks and the Latin states in Greece.

Of course, all existing customers of an Expert or Basic version  will benefit of an upgrade price for the new equivalent version.

4) PHYSICAL MAP OF EUROPE 2009
A new version of the Physical map of Europe is available now for Corel Draw and Illustrator users. In addition to the 200 m., 500 m. 1000 m., 2000 m. and 3500 m. contour lines and to the rivers and to 2600 populated places, you will find in it the shapes of the European countries with their borders of 2009.
The vector files are provided in 24 layers but Corel Draw users need only 18 layers as the towns names and the long and short form names of the countries are available as ObjectData. Moreover, the first level administrative divisions (regions, states or communities) are given for the United Kingdom, for France, Belgium, Germany, Spain, Italy and Greece.

5) ANTIQUE MAPS
The map of the Carolingian Empire in 814 from the Victor Duruy Atlas historique de la France, the map of Italy about the 5th century B.C. from the Drioux & Leroy Atlas universel de Géographie and a World map of 1808 from the Atlas historique et géographique by Las Cases alias Lesage can be downloaded in high resolution by all Euratlas-Info subscribers.

6) EURATLAS-INFO & EURATLAS SHOP
Documents and products mentioned above are in the new Euratlas-Info and Euratlas Shop pages. These pages have been revised to become more ergonomic and are now easier to navigate.

1) BRITISH ISLANDS 1688
Here is a map of the British Isles made in 1688 by Pierre Duval d'Abbeville (1618-1683), nephew of Nicolas Sanson and himself Geographer of the King. This document is special because it shows the Anglo-Saxon Kingdoms of the Heptarchy (about 600-800 A.D.) simultaneously with the main 18th. century towns.

2) ENGLAND
England has been added in the Europe Photos section. You can see some pictures of Bath, Stonehenge, Avebury, Salisbury, Chester (the Roman Deva), Oxford and the English countryside. We have added, of course, the statues of Boudica, Cromwell, Lord Nelson and two foreigners having had strong ties with this country: Richard Lionheart andMahatma Gandhi.

3) GEOREFERENCED HISTORICAL VECTOR DATA
We are still improving the Euratlas Georeferenced Historical Vector Data and the licences for 5 centuries are already available in the Euratlas Shop. Thus, you will find here the licences for the years 2000, 1900,1800, 1700, 1600 and 1500. The 15 remaining centuries will be added progressively and the same data will be available in French too.
There are 2 kinds of licences: simple or non-commercial and extended or commercial. Please read carefully which rights are granted by each kind of licence.
Each Euratlas Georeferenced Historical Vector Data set consists of 6 layers provided in Latin-1 and in UTF-8: autonomous peoples, cities, dioceses, sovereign_countries, holder_countries and provinces. There are also physical layers, without names: rivers, fuzzy_borders, and seas. The mountains are common for all the centuries: 200, 500, 1000, 2000 and 3500 meters contour lines. Several Layer Descriptors (SLD) are included for the rivers, countries, dioceses, provinces, seas and mountains. If you purchase a licence in 2008 you will be entitled to receive free updates until Novemer 30, 2009.

4) GERMANY 1789 INTERACTIVE
Mr Thomas Höckmann has improved the English version of his atlas of Germany 1789. Now, in Germany 1789 Interactive, you will find 40 maps of Germany at the end of the 18th century with direct links to the relevant information about the territories in the online encyclopedia Wikipedia, English version.

5) ITALY 2009
Here is, for Euratlas-Info members only, an A4 color printable map of Italy with regions and provinces, valid from 2009 on. This map is provided in English, Italian and French and a blank version adapted for school tests is also available.

In 2009, a new vector version of the Periodical Historical Atlas of Europe will be issued with more details and extended zooming possibilities and all existing customers will benefit of an upgrade price. Check the upcoming issue of Euratlas-Info.

1) THE NILE LANDS 1862
Heinrich Kiepert (1818 - 1899) was a German geographer and cartographer who issued a wide number of historical atlases and maps, for instance Atlas von Hellas 1844, Atlas Antiquus 1861, Formae Orbis Antiqui 1893, Neuer Handatlas über alle Theile der Erde 1860. We have here an excerpt from a second edition of this Handatlas: a 1862 map of the "Nilländer", that is of the Nile lands, in which you will see the known parts of Egypt, Sudan, Darfur and Ethiopia, mentioned as Amhara.

2) WALES
The Brythonic or Welsh kingdoms were not definitively conquered by England before the end of the 13th century and it was King Edward I (1239 - 1309) who established a chain of fortresses to control the country: Beaumaris, Caernarfon, Conwy, Harlech, Rhuddlan, Denbigh or Dolwyddelan. Here are these places, together with Snowdonia, Beddgelert orAnglesey in the Europe Photos section. These are images of a land of castles, mist and legends.

3) GEOREFERENCED HISTORICAL VECTOR DATA
We have improved the Euratlas Historical Maps in particular by adding the Ottoman sanjaks in all the centuries and by increasing the detail level of the French départements or gouvernements and of the British counties. Moreover we have converted our historical maps into a geographic information system (GIS) and we need now to finish the transfer of all data: provinces, regions, countries and cities. Presumably in November, we will be in position to sell the first Euratlas Georeferenced Historical Vector Data. The large amount of information present in the Periodical Historical Atlas of Europe will be offered in a very structured way and each user will be able to analyze, to display or to organize the data spatially. Euratlas-Info members can already download a sample of our georeferenced vector data in shapefile(.shp) format.
Subsequently, probably in February 2009, we will issue a HGIS (Historical Geographic Information System) Atlas of Europe. We are preparing a formal chronology and we will try to add it in this new version.
Of course, all existing customers of the present Euratlas Historical Vector Maps of Europe and of the current Periodical Historical Atlas of Europe will benefit of an upgrade price for the new versions, respectively, of the Georeferenced Historical Vector Data and of the HGIS Atlas of Europe.

4) MITTELEUROPATLAS
Dr Andreas Birken, a cartographer and a historian: author of severalacademic publications, has realized a historical atlas of the Central Europeancountries from 1250 until 1871. Here, you will find maps with a rare level of accuracy covering a wide area of Europe, from Marseille to Lviv (Lvov) and from Copenhagen to Rome. These maps are offering a complete and highly detailed survey of all the kingdoms, principalities, duchies, counties, lordships and provinces that existed in what is now Germany, Belgium, Netherlands, Switzerland, East France, Czechia, Slovakia, Poland, Hungary, North Italy, Slovenia and Croatia. This atlas exists only in German but this not a problem for users who are mainly interested by European history. Try the demo version.

1) THE OTTOMAN EMPIRE IN 1845
While there are many records of the Western countries, historical maps of the Middle East are very scarce. Thus, it is really difficult to recreate the historical geography of Turkey, Lebanon, the Kurdish regions, Armenia or Iraq, all the more as the populations were speaking various languages. The replacement of the Ottoman script with a Latin alphabet in 1928, the specific Armenian and Georgian alphabets, the various transcriptions of Arabic words and the numerous transliterations of some names (e.g. from Kurdish to Arabic, then to Ottoman Turkish and finally to modern Turkish) makes it quite impossible to locate some places.Here is a map of the Ottoman Empire realized by Louis Vivien de Saint-Martin and Adolphe Noël des Vergers and published in Paris by Charles Picquet in 1845. Names and borders are legible. Therefore it will be possible to spot the ancient places with their modern equivalents, to search for the small 19th century Kurdish or Armenian autonomies or to examine the border between the Pashalik of Baghdad and Iran.

2) GREECE
In the Europe Photos section, you'll find some new pictures of Greece: the legendary Bridge of Arta (allegedly built with human blood), the modern Rio-Antirio Bridge (built with EU funding), the Souli Mountains, the Vlach town of Aminciu or Metsovo, the fortress of Patras, the Meteora, the Fine Gate of Nicopolis and many other views of Athens and Greek landmarks.

3) EUROPE AND EUROPEAN UNION 2008
Here is, for Euratlas-Info subscribers only, an A4 printable map of whole Europe and the European Union. The map shows the names of all the European countries with their capital-cities and is available in color or grey level, blank or with labels.

1) HISTORICAL ATLAS OF THE ANCIENT ORIENT
Now the historical maps of Egypt, Asia Minor and the Fertile Crescent, covering 30 centuries in the Antiquity are available online. There is one map for each century and the collection allows an easy overview of the ancient countries from 3300 BC until 300 BC according to the “official“ chronology.This historical atlas was realized in German by Dr Andreas Birken and you will find a full version in the Euratlas Shop. In this full version you can read a discussion of the problems of chronology of the ancient Orient; alternatives are shown.

2) GREEK ISLANDS
In the Europe Photos section, you'll find some new pictures of the Archipelago, the Greek Islands in the Aegean. See, for instance, the windmills and pelecan of Mykonos, the landscapes of Paros and Kythnos or the statue of the navarch Andreas Miaoulis in Ermoupolis, Syros. A small map of the Cyclades will make easier the locating of the places.

3) THE STATES OF GERMANY 2008
Here is a simple A4 printable map of the German Bundesländer. Available in English or German, in addition with a blank version, this map is adapted for school tests. Note that the Regierungsbezirke or governement regions are also shown in the 5 states who implement this administrative division.

1) EUROPEAN RAILWAYS ABOUT 1875
This is a French detailed map of the European rail network published approximately in 1875. The borders of the European countries are shown as they were before the Congress of Berlin (June-July 1878) but some later railways are marked by simple black lines, like the Simplon tunnel (1906). This map was made by the geographers A.T. Chartier and Th. Gobert and engraved by E. Kollmann.

2) CZECHIA
The Czech Republic is a country of tales and legends. Everywhere, one can see Art Nouveau sculptures and decorated houses. In the Europe Photos section, you will discover some pictures of Czechia, most of them being related to history.
Remember that Borivoj the Ploughman was the first Duke of Bohemia and that the country was evangelized by Cyril and Methodius (9th cent.), the missionaries coming from Thessaloniki.

3) THE DEPARTMENTS OF FRANCE 2008

3) HISATLAS 0.95
Several history maps have been added in Hisatlas, Historical and Political Maps of the Modern Age. This atlas includes now 256 highly detailed political maps covering quite all the countries of the world. Most of the legends are in English but some are in simple Spanish too. Existing customers are kindly requested to send us an e-mail after April 2, 2008 and we will send them a download link for this new version Hisatlas 0.95.

In May, we will present an online version of Dr Andreas Birken's New Atlas of Ancient Orient.

1) EXTENDED PEUTINGERIAN MAP
An intermediate zoom level has been added to the Peutingerian Map. Now, you can click everywehere on a one of the full sections of the Table and you will reach an enlarged image giving an overall view of the selected area. Another click will bring you to the highest zoom level. Of course, for each zoom level a grey level transcription with the main place names is provided. So, you will enjoy an easy exploration of this exceptional document.


2) MONTENEGRO
The smallest country with the Double-Headed Eagle, a wonderfull country in Southern Europe: 685 000 inhabitants and a little town as historic capital. Have a look at our collection of Montenegro pictures.


3) EUROPE 1950
Discover the lost countries of the 20th century. Here is an easy political political map of Europe in 1950. You will see again the Two Germanies and the SSSR, but also Yugoslavia, the Emirate of Cyrenaica and several smaller entities. This map doesn't show the administrative divisions of the states and is not provided in the Periodical Historical Atlas of Europe but you can download the full image and print it in good quality.


4) EURATLAS SITE
The Euratlas website is constantly expanding and a restructuration of the online framework will soon be necessary. For the time being, we have prepared a simple site map in order to make easier your navigation in the several sections of the whole website.

1) A WORLD ATLAS
An online world atlas that allows you to highlight each of the 194 sovereign countries in the world with their local and English name in short and long form, with their capital, flag, population, land area and with the average life expectancy of the inhabitants. Moreover a red bar shows the population size in an analogical way.An additional page displays the special status territories like Gaza, Transnistria, or the Somalian states.

2) Printable World Maps
As an Euratlas-Info member you can download printable blank or labeled world maps adapted for A4 sheets: a b/w blank map, a b/w labeled map with the countries, a color blank map and a color labeled map with all the countries. Small fonts were used for the names so that all the 194 independant states of the world can be shown on one single sheet.

3) Croatia, Slavonia, Bosnia, Serbia and Montenegro
Here is an old map of the Dalmatian lands: Croatia, Slavonia, the Military Frontier, Serbia, Bosnia, Herzegovina and Montenegro. Considering the boundaries shown on it and the activity of the author, it appears that this map was drawn about 1865. Friedrich Handtke (1815 -1879 ) was the director of the cartographic section in the Carl Flemming (1806 -1878 ) publishing house in Glogow or Glogau. Handtke drew himself 168 maps out of 260 published under his authority.

4) Albania
In the Europe Photos pages, you will find a new section with 41 pictures of Albania, especially from the Gjirokaster and Butrint or Buthrorum areas which are both listed in the UNESCO World Heritage Sites.You will also see photos of the colourful Tirana, the Berat citadel, Shkodër, Saranda and several Albanian landscapes.
